What I’ve been up to

So my days have consisted of me sleeping in, eating constantly to try to gain weight, working out, and video games. School has been very chill but it is hard to find motivation when you aren’t physically in class. Like I said the workload isn’t crazy but it’s still hard to find motivation. Almost everyday I go outside and shoot hoops with my brothers but that only lasts so long. The days go by so fast, like I’ve never experienced before in my life. Some days it feels like I wake up and then go to bed. I think it’s because I basically do the same thing everyday and it’s just this endless cycle I can’t avoid. It is very boring not being able to see anyone new or any of my good friends. I think the worst part about quarantine is knowing your friends are home and so close but not being able to hang out with them. I miss Dayton so much and I made so many good friends in the little time I was there. It is really a bummer we can’t go back but who I really feel bad for is the seniors who won’t be able to experience their last moments at Dayton surrounded by their friends. I couldn’t imagine missing my last experience of college like that. Overall I hope this ends soon I we can all go back to our normal lives.

What I want to Learn

One thing I want to learn more about in this class is how to read better. What I mean by this is, being able to catch things when I read. This could be context clues or anything that the author has written to let the reader know something. I feel like whenever I am reading I don’t take in much information, I more so just say the words in my head. I have a bad habit of zoning out while reading and it tends to hurt me when I end up getting tested on it. So one thing that would be cool would just be able to get some tips and tricks on how to become a better reader. Although I do realize that to become a better reader you just have to read more but I just wanted to know if there is anything else that I could be using to benefit myself while reading. I feel like I am an alright writer but I tend to not be able to make my sentences flow and connect. One thing I’d like to work on is becoming a better writer when it comes to making my papers flow better instead of seeming kind of choppy, like this one. The last thing I always forget is what punctuation is used for each situation. I think if I were able to know how to use punctuation better, then this would help my papers be better in every way and not seem as repetitive. Those are the things that I would like to learn still in this class.

Coronavirus Pros and Cons

One thing that I didn’t know was the Coronavirus has already infected over 100,000 people and killed over 4,000 of those infected. I had no idea that this had such a big impact already on our world. I thought before that it was just a couple cases found and people were just making a big deal for the news. I never thought it would have gotten me extra days of spring break or caused us to have to take classes online. The Coronavirus has affected me in some positive and some negative ways but overall I am shocked. Almost all of my friends are going to be home soon because of the virus and are in the same situation as me when it comes to classes online. I honestly would rather take classes in person because I think it would be way less confusing. I also think it is just more helpful in general because we can actually talk face to face. My biggest problem with it is I feel like I’ll just forget about assignments because I am not physically there. But, I am also super excited to be home for extra long and be able to see my friends more than I expected. I know my mom is very excited about the situation because I am her “baby” and she hasn’t seen me in awhile. My dad probably couldn’t less but he will definitely be happy to see me, I hope anyway. The last thing I am really happy about is that my brothers will be in town as well and I’ll be able to hang with them more than I thought. Over the years my brothers and I have gotten a lot closer and always have a fun time together. In conclusion, Coronavirus equals mixed feelings ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

My Favorite Superheroes

Spider-man is my favorite superhero and has been since I can remember. I literally have a baby picture with a spider-man suit on when I saw 8 months old. So, whether Spider-man was shoved in my face or not as a child, he still remains my favorite out of all the superheroes. Spider-man is my favorite superhero because unlike a lot of the other superheroes he can be hurt easily and it takes lots of skill in his fights to not get hurt. I like how he is super agile and can get to places fast using his web. Another thing that makes Spider-man unique to me is that he created his own webbing. I know his agility and other super strengths aren’t natural but I do think it is cool that one of Spider-man’s most iconic characteristics is one he created. Spider-man is also the youngest superhero and in the movies he is easy to relate to since we are similar ages. Lastly the reason I think Spider-man is the best is because he is the most realistic and similar to a normal average human being.

My second favorite superhero is Thor. Thor is questionably the strongest of them all and his lightning is quite frankly just bad as. After the movie Thor Ragnarok, he immediately jumped up to my number two. He is very funny as well as super resourceful in battle. Many fights have been won because of Thor. In the end he seems to always make the right decision to protect those who need protecting. That is why Spider-man and Thor are the two best superheroes.

My 21 point Game

My high school basketball team had a bad streak of losing seasons. The only season in the past years to have a winning one was my junior year. We started off the season strong, winning the first 8 out of 10 games. The senior class at my high school was very good at basketball and led the team in points. One weekend during the season a couple of teammates were seen in the background of a party picture that had alcohol in it and got suspended even though they weren’t drinking. Of course these were the two leading scorers on the team. The suspension lasted for two games which meant they wouldn’t be able to play. I knew that this would be a big opportunity for me to have a great game. Our first game without my teammates was the next Friday at home. We were playing Worthington Kilbourne for the first time this year who had a similar record to our own. This was a big game because they were in our conference which decides where we place in the tournament. As we began to warm up I didn’t feel pressure or nervous. I had already played in many varsity games and to me it was just another game. Tip off came around and the game had started. We were playing extremely good defense and were moving it well on offense. During the first half I had only shot three times, and made two of the three three-pointers I had shot. I came out into the second half very aggressive. I was looking for scoring opportunities every time I had the ball. I ended up shooting 6 more times making all six of my shots. I had a perfect second half and helped my team secure the big win. This was one of the best moments I had in my junior year basketball season and will never forget this moment.

Most and Least Favorite Things so far in English

So far what I have enjoyed about English the most is the class discussions we have as an entire class. I find these helpful for learning as well as enjoyable to hear other students’ thoughts on a topic. Another thing I’ve really liked so far has been the articles we’ve read for class. I think these articles have been very interesting and have been fun to talk about with the class. One thing I’ve really thought has helped has been reading the Squeeze the Sponge text and using the insight learned from that to help apply better work to my papers. I like how the chapters assigned to us relate to our papers and help us with ideas for them. I think that the draft days for helping us brainstorm ideas has helped me with my papers as well as the peer review days. These help me get new ideas and catch mistakes that I may have missed before. I like how you use videos in class to help better explain things and not to mention the awesome videos from great tv series like The Office. I think it is a very interactive class which helps us as students stay focused and learn more about other people’s thoughts. This is by far my most active class I have, and I really think that this helps me stay on track while also having fun.

The main thing I don’t like so far are the home groups. I think it would just be easier to stay where we sit and talk to those around us. Although I don’t mind my home group and have no problems with anyone in it, I still would rather just stay in my normal seat and not have to move all my stuff everyday. If I’m being honest that would be my only minor complaint so far. I have actually enjoyed this class and kinda look forward to it in a way. You should be proud because this is the only one I have felt that way about. Overall I have found ENG 100 to be a great experience and look forward to future classes.

A Day in the Life of a College Student

Everyday is a different day for a college student but this will be a s\description of what I do every Thursday. First thing I do is wake up at 6 a.m. for my 8 a.m. class. I usually chill in bed for about 10 min before actually getting up. Once I’m up I sluggishly walk over to turn on the light which painfully blinds me every time. I then grab my shower case and head to the bathroom where I put in my contacts and proceed to shower. By the time I’m out of the shower it is usually around 6:55 a.m.. After this I grab the first sweatshirt and pair of sweats I see and slip them on. This then leads me to the dinning hall which opens at 7. My breakfast is usually Greek yogurt with granola and peaches on the side. I go back to my room and eat while watching the best show of all time, The Office. Once I’m done eating I brush my teeth and head to my dreadful 8 a.m. education class which is located at Fitz Hall. This class is the worst part of my week because it is 3 hours long and feels like 50. During this class I almost fall asleep approximately 20 times and take in about zero information. Once the class ends I have already been starving for an hour but have time to eat because I have math right after. At the beginning of math I eat a protein bar and after class my friend Courtney buys me ABP, yes she is awesome for this. I grab my food, thank Courtney and head to my favorite class, English. I finish my food at the beginning of class and show my homework. After this class I usually go spend my own money on a second lunch at the Que! I then take this back to my room to eat it while watching the office. Once I have finished I go lift at the Rec with my friend Joey and are usually there for about an hour and a half. I end up going back most of the time to play basketball and play for about 2 hours. Once I am exhausted and starving again I head back get food and take a shower, yes I watch the office while I eat again. I then hang out with friends and we always end up watching a movie til I get tired and go to bed. I set my alarm for 9 o’clock and the lights are out. Now that is a day in the life of a college student.

My Writing Process

My current writing process starts with me trying to find a specific topic I want to talk about. I then begin to think of each subtopic that I want to cover so these can back up or provide more details into my idea. I set this up on the paper by writing my topic at the very top and then I write each subtopic I want to talk about below that. After I’ve done this before I start to write the paper I then think of how I could wrap it up in a smooth way that flows. I don’t actually write the conclusion but I do write down any good ideas I have at the bottom so I don’t forget them. This also helps me keep in mind how I want to finish the paper so that while I’m writing it, I always have an idea of where the paper is going.  This process was taught to me in many years ago in grade school and I’ve used it ever since. In English class we would always write 5 paragraph papers, so this set up with the main topic and the 3 subtopics followed by the conclusion. This was always the way I processed writing a paper and still the way I process it today. I think this process works very well for me and I think it helps me brainstorm and get an idea of what I am specifically going to write about. I also think this process saves me time as a writer because I don’t just go in blind and get lost while writing. Since I learned this process at such a young age I could definitely see myself adapting to a different processing method. I could see this because I think the method I use now is a little simple and although it does work for me, I think that other methods would help provide the outline I need to write a better and stronger paper. That is my processing method that I use for when I write a paper.

A little about myself!

Hi! I’m Kyle Miller and I am a first year student at the University of Dayton pursuing a major in Special Education. I am 18 years old and have two older brothers and one cute little dog named Oreo. My brother Jordan is 20 and he is technically my step brother but we are super close so I just say that he is my brother. My other brother who is actually my biological brother is Justin who is 20 years old. I grew up in Hilliard, Ohio and still live there today. My favorite sport is basketball and I have been playing it since I was 6. In high school I broke the three point percentage record my junior year and we ended up winning our division. My senior year of baseball I broke the 4 records at my school and got first team in my division. Our team ended up winning the division for the 5th year in a row. It was like living in a movie and oh do I absolutely love movies. I am a huge Marvel and Star Wars fan. I have seen every movie they have ever made, including my favorite superheroes movies, Spider-man. My favorite things to do at Dayton are to hang with friends and play basketball at the Rec Center. My friends and I watch movies almost every night and as of now have watched over 50 movies since we’ve been here. I play basketball at the Rec about 5 times a week and it is always a blast. The more you get to know me the more you realize that I am very energetic and always have to be doing something. This in my opinion makes my life a lot more enjoyable and hopefully also for the people around me. Lastly I would like to say that I have a big passion for helping those with special needs and I have made it my life goal to have as positive impact as possible on as many individuals as I can!
